Author Sunji Ali A.K.A. Gene A. Williams, Founder and President of Soul Vision Productions, was born at a time of stagnation in America, but grew up during a period of great change in America. His beginnings were in the mid-south, in Marvel, Arkansas, moving to northern California at the beginning of one of the most vigorous points of the Civil Rights Movement: Soldiers coming home from World War II finding out the extent to which "My Budy" truly went, Brown vs. Board of Education, miscegenation for love or to be defiant, and as always the music, music, music...
He attended schools in Hayward, California and the socially conscious East Oakland. He matriculated at San Francisco City College, and Berkeley University obtaining a Bachelor of Arts. He obtained a Master of Arts from the University of California at Los Angeles - UCLA.
Sunji Ali is a teacher having taught on the college level at Chico state University, and in Los angeles and Compton School districts. He has toured America lecturing on Black History and reciting poetry in churches, libraries, civic halls theatres, restaurants, schools, colleges, and universities. He has presented plays with stellar casts drawing from the California Jazz & Blues Music international melting pot and the Hollywood local set at the former CrossRoads Theatre owned by Actress Marla Gibbs. His plays have also toured local churches as well.
Soul Vision Productions produced the anthology Deep River Rythms featuring poetry by members of Soul Vision with great reviews. A solo CD featuring Sunji Ali's poetry is coming soon, so stay tuned. Expect to see new works pouring out from the progressive, ever evolving ensemble Soul Vision under the direction of Sunji Ali!
